Major William Slade Vincent

No information can be found on the early life of Major Vincent, until he was employed by the Colonial Bank of Australiasia. The bank was foundered in Victoria and he, at the of age 27, was a branch manager at the Wood’s Point branch in 1877. He stayed with the bank until 1883 and the last branch he managed was in St. Kilda, Vic.

On 22nd May 1883 Major Vincent sailed from Brisbane to Townsville, in north Queensland (Qld.), on the “Roma”. This may have been to talk to the Queensland Defence Force (Q.D.F) establishment about a role in the army or to look for business opportunities in Qld.

In March 1886, advertisements started to appear in Qld. newspapers advertising the services of the company of W.S. Vincent, stock and station agents. Interestingly, the advertisements also stated the company were financial agents, and there could have been a financial link his former employer, the Colonial Bank.

His stock and station business was successful and he sold Hinchinbrook Station in 1885 [7] and, in his own name, he secured the rights to various pastoral “runs” (leases).
